About Us
Bwiza Art Centre, established in 2019 by Elysee Mushimiyimana and Iddy Habyarimana, emerged from a shared vision cultivated during their art education at Ecole d'Arts de Nyundo. Inspired by a dream to foster artistic growth in their hometown Kamembe, the duo embarked on creating a haven for local artists. Driven by personal struggles to find platforms for art during their school days, the founders aimed to address this gap in Kamembe. Bwiza Art Centre not only serves as a showcase for diverse local artists but also functions as an educational hub, guiding young talents to hone their artistic abilities. Beyond the canvas, Bwiza Art Centre offers a space for relaxation, where patrons can enjoy drinks, food, and engage in conversations. The centre becomes a cultural hub, hosting ceremonies and events, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the city. Elysee and iddy's dream extends beyond the confines of their establishment; they aspire to transform Kamembe into a thriving artistic hub, nurturing talents and enriching the cultural landscape of the region.

Our Artists
Elysee Mushimiyimana
Elysee Mushimiyimana is a Rwandan contemporary artist born in Kamembe. His artistic journey grew from a childhood passion for drawing and his formal training at the Nyundo School of Art. Specializing in African particularly Rwandan art, he captures the life of his community through portraits, landscapes, and everyday scenes. Deeply inspired by the people he has met, the places he has been, and the history he has witnessed, Elysee’s work tells the story of his life and experiences. His mother’s love and guidance were a constant source of encouragement, shaping both his character and his creativity. Music, especially reggae, also plays a major role in his inspiration artists like Lucky Dube and Bob Marley influence his themes of unity, gratitude, love, and respect for nature. Gratitude is at the heart of his art. Through his paintings, he highlights moments and people that society may often overlook, showing that happiness and meaning can be found even in the simplest aspects of life. Elysee wants viewers to connect with his journey, see the life he has lived, and reflect on the value of community, history, and appreciation. Working with acrylics, oils, watercolors, charcoal, ink, and wood pieces, Elysee’s artworks are marked by visible brushstrokes, darker tones, and simplified details, giving them emotional depth and a distinctive voice
Obed Habumugisha
Obed HABUMUGISHA was born in 2002 and raised in Rwanda from a young age they displayed a keen interest in art,frequently drawing,painting and sculpture scenes inspired by my dear mama . One special gift I’ve inherited from my mother since childhood is her talent in handcrafts. She used to make small baskets, mats, and sweaters. I saw her as a kind of fashion designer, although she never did it professionally she did it mostly for fun, especially during holidays. As time went on, she started teaching me and showing me her creations. From a young age, she would often tell me how much she loved it. For me, this truly made me see myself as someone who would carry on that passion and preserve my family’s heritage. Seeing local galleries and museums at a young age sparked a love for creativity that would shape the kind of art they would make in the future. Hobed’s work is reflection of their deep connection to Rwandan culture and landscapes blending traditional influences with contemporary artistic expression. through their art Hobed seeks to capture and share the beauty and stories of their heritage,offering viewers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of African life.
Yussuf Nsengiyumva
Nsengiyumva Yusuf is a self-taught artist based in Rusizi, Rwanda. From a young age, he showed a natural fascination with creativity, often playing with mud and shaping imaginative objects. His formal artistic journey began in 2022, marking a significant turning point in his career. Yusuf’s work is characterized by his unique use of collage and mixed media. He creates his artworks by assembling different kinds of discarded and recycled materials such as plastics, fabric pieces, and scrap metals onto the canvas. By transforming waste into powerful visual stories, he highlights both creativity and environmental awareness. His themes often celebrate African art and culture. Through his distinctive blend of traditional influences and contemporary expression, Yusuf offers a fresh and meaningful perspective on his heritage, turning everyday materials into artworks that carry deep cultural and social value.
Bienvenue Ishimwe shema
ISHIMWE SHEMA Bienvenu's journey into art began during childhood, but it wasn't until 2020, amidst the COVID_19 pandemic, that he ventured into it professionally.Guided by his mother, Ishimwe found his artistic voice, which centers on the deep connection between nature and humanity. His artworks often feature animals, serving as messengers of his reflections on African culture and ways of life. Beyond paintings,Ishimwe expresses his creativity through sculptures crafts from recycled materials, and distinctive African jewelry like horn necklace and bracelets. His art is inspired by a belief in the power of humanity, peace, and love , as he strives to convey meaningful messages through his creations.
Iddy Habyarimana
Habyarimana iddy is a professional artist who works and lives in Rwanda, born in 1998 in western(Rusizi) He grew up with the dreams of being an architect but He realized it was time for him to move to those art forms when he was 16 years old he decided to have them as his options in secondary school by the influence of his teachers and classmates where he used to draw in his books, He put his first brush on a canvas in 2016 In ecole d'art de nyundo His works focused on life of brown skin portraiture and figurative abstracts usually imaging the moments From his child hood he used to look at the people's face, he always wondered how we have the same and equal body details but still look different from each other he tried to study that experience in his portraits Habyarimana iddy's portraits depict to be realism usually uses oil paints and acrylics, by applying both thick and thin layer of paints on his works, He defines art as a part of life because it gives him joy, freedom, opportunity to learn new things and share those experience with the society (world ) He believes in art as a connection of people and their visual language
